Pioneers shut out St. Mary’s in game two to complete sweep
WINONA, Minn. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team swept St. Mary’s University in a total of 10 innings in Friday’s doubleheader at St. Mary’s Field. Overall, the Pioneers (4-4) dished out 26 runs, 24 hits, four home runs, six doubles and 26 RBI’s over the Cardinals (3-7). The Pioneers 12-3 win in game one and 14-0 shutout in game two concludes UW-Platteville’s busy week of six games in five days.

"There was such positive energy today!" said head coach Becca Lowe. "I could feel it in the dugout, on the field and when girls were up to bat. They were fun to be around. I am very proud of the way our girls have made adjustments at the plate. They learned from their mistakes and ran with it today. All around, a great day!"
In game one, the Pioneers sprinted out to a 6-0 lead with Shannon Gaul going yard for two RBI's followed shortly by Riley Kelsch knocking one out of the park, scoring three in the top of the 1st. Amber Chow (2-4) suffered the loss and pitched just .2 innings surrendering six runs and four hits while striking out one.
The Pioneers ran in two more in the 2nd before the Cardinals were able to put three up in the bottom of the 2nd. Leading 8-3 the Pioneers extended their lead by four in the top of the 4th which included a two RBI double to left field by Abby Burns with two outs. Neither team scored in the 5th inning and the Pioneers run-ruled the Cardinals to take the 12-3 win in five innings.
Ashton Hoeppner (3-1) earned the win in game one, striking out three in five innings and allowing three runs and five hits.
The Pioneers kicked things off early once again in game two when Claire Bakkestuen homered in the top of the 1st to score along with teammate Rachel Plautz.
Leading 2-0, the Pioneers notched five runs in the 2nd off of singles by Burns, Baskkestuen, Angela Laabs and a groundout to second base by Kelsch.
UW-Platteville tacked on four more in the third with a single through the left side by Gaul, another by Laabs, and a 2 RBI up the middle by Kelsch. Leading double digits already, Alejandra Ochoa doubled through the right side to run in Haili Cota in the 4th inning. Rachel Plautz also tallied a RBI off a sac fly to center field to put the Cardinals trailing 13-0 going into the bottom of the 4th.
Gaul wrapped up the scoring for the day in true fashion with a solo home run to lead off the 5th inning and give 14-0 lead.
The home run was the third of the week for the third baseman.
Burns (1-1) led game two in the circle and took home the win after striking out five and allowing two hits with one walk in three innings pitched. McKenna Rommel pitched relief and walked one and gave up four hits in two innings.
Overall, the Pioneers committed just one error to the Cardinals' four.
Up next, the Pioneers will face Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent, UW-Oshkosh in a non-conference doubleheader and home opener on Tuesday, April 6 at the UW-Platteville Softball Complex.
