Pioneers lose heartbreaker

UW-Whitewater scored a goal on a scramble in front of the net 8 minutes into overtime, handing a gritty UW-Platteville squad a 2-1 men's soccer loss Friday at the UWP Soccer Bowl.

The Pioneers tied the score with under 15 minutes to play. Vann Maxson threw the ball in from the sideline, and Sean Chipress--all 5-7 of him--outjumped everyone to get his head on the ball and direct it into the Warhawk net.

The game remained tied thanks to some tough defense and a piece of brilliant goalkeeping by Joe Calliari. With under four minutes remaining, Calliari dove horizontally to stop a Warhawk shot from point-blank range.

UW-Whitewater improved to 8-7 overall, while the Pioneers fell to 1-12. UWP closes out its home season Sunday at 3 p.m. vs. Beloit College.

Nationally ranked Titans win 3-1

UW-Oshkosh, ranked second in the region and 12th nationally, beat a game UW-Platteville team 3-1 in men's soccer action Saturday at the UWP Soccer Complex.

The Pioneers gave the Titans a scare when Brandon Plautz scored on a great effort at the 70:05 mark. With 12 minutes left, the Titans tried to draw the Pioneers out of their half-field defensive trap by holding the ball, but the Pioneers kept the low-pressure strategy. That resulted in the unusual sight of UWO holding the ball and the teams standing 30 yards apart waiting for the other to make a move. Finally at the 8-minute mark, the Titans put the ball back in play, and two minutes later were able to score on a crossing play for the clinching third-goal.

The Titans improved to 11-1 overall, while the Pioneers slipped to 1-11.
