ST. PETER, Minn. – For just the second time in program history, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's soccer team (14-2-4) will advance to the third round of the NCAA DIII Tournament after taking down host Gustavus Adolphus (16-2-3) by a final score of 1-0 on Sunday afternoon from Gustie Soccer Field in St. Peter, Minnesota.
The Pioneers, making their seventh NCAA appearance, will play in the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2012 with the win.
UW-Platteville broke through early, as junior Alester Dawson knocked home a header on the far post in the eighth minute following a throw in by junior Ethan Dietrich and a headed pass by senior Alex Wano. The goal was Dawson's first of the season and put the Pioneers in front in the early stages of the match.
Gustavus Adolphus failed to attempt a shot in the first half but turned up the attack in the second, finishing with 14 shots, including 10 in the final 20 minutes. Senior goalkeeper Lucas Cisneros managed to keep UW-Platteville in front, stopping all five of the Gusties shots on goal to post the clean sheet.
The Pioneers were outshot 14-6 for the match and 5-1 in shots on goal but made the most of their only attempt on net with the goal by Dawson. All six of UW-Platteville's shot attempts came from different players.
In the third round of the tournament next weekend, the Pioneers will face UW-Eau Claire for a third time this season. The Blugolds won the first two meetings, including the WIAC Championship game a week ago. The game will be a 3 p.m. in Eau Claire.
*As with every UW-Platteville win this year, the Platteville A&W will be offering a $3 Pioneer burger the day after the win and the Platteville Taco John's will be offering 10 tacos for $10 the day after each Pioneer win.
