PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Senior Lucas Godon of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's soccer team has spent the summer as a marketing and communication intern at Siemens Digital Industries Software.
The internship is full-time and allows Godon to work completely remote. The company is one of five divisions of the parent company Siemens AG, which is the 88th largest company in the world by market cap. Throughout the internship, Godon has worked with people from all over the world, including Germany, Austria, the UK, and Vietnam.
Siemens Digital Industries Software has left its mark on several different industries, including aerospace and defense, automotive and transportation, and medical devices and pharmaceuticals. The company specializes in a wide range of software that be used in many facets of the design and development process of products and services.
Godon shared some of his experiences at the internship below:
What have you done at your internship so far?
Within Siemens Digital Industries Software division, I am on the Siemens Empowers Education and Startups team. This team helps connect Siemens software to academic institutions around the world, as well as provides support to new startup companies. As a marketing and communications intern, I create a lot of internal and external content that promotes these initiatives and communicates their value to stakeholders. On the academic side, I've had several blogs published on the company website, and I help develop the framework for things like webinars and podcasts. I also create lots of PowerPoints. On the startup side, I spend a lot of time doing competitor analysis research, and I'm helping the team create a new website.
How did you hear about the internship and what was the hiring process like?
I ran across the position when I was scrolling through LinkedIn. Siemens has an extremely good reputation worldwide, and I knew the position would be a great opportunity to start my career. I submitted my resume and a cover letter on their website. Within a few days I got an email back from the hiring manager saying that I had been selected for the first round of interviews. The first interview was a 1 on 1 conversation with the hiring manager where she asked several questions to get to know me. A few days after that I got another email saying that I had been selected for the second and final round of interview. This interview was conducted with three managers on the team and was honestly very intimidating. The interview went well, and I got a call a week later saying that I had been selected for the role.
What skills have you learned that will translate to your career goals?
Working at Siemens has been great because of the emphasis they place on personal and career growth. While I have grown my marketing skills in areas like data analysis and content marketing, my managers have a substantial interest in soft skill development. These are skills like communication, networking, and leadership. I work on a team with six other interns from around the United States, and I've been able to take positions of leadership and learn how to effectively communicate within a business setting. These skills will help me achieve my career goal of owning a business one day.
What can you take from this internship to carry over into your athletic career at UW-Platteville?
The biggest takeaway from this internship is that hard work leads to success. There was a massive pool of applicants for this position, and I knew I needed something to set me apart. Prior to both interviews, I spent at least four hours preparing and learning all I could about the company. I had pages of notes and thought of responses to practically any question they could ask me. Not only did this preparation help me polish my responses, but it also helped me impress the managers with my knowledge of the company. I continue to work hard at my job every day, and I'm hopefully on track to receive a return offer at the end of the summer. This mindset carries over into my athletic career at UW-Platteville. The harder I work and prepare for the season, the more I'll be able to help my team achieve our goals.
Have you enjoyed the internship so far?
I've had other internships in the past, and none of them compared to my experience at Siemens. The work/life balance is great, the benefits are outstanding, and everyone within the organization is extremely supportive. Plus, its remote so I get to hang out with my dog all day.
