The Pioneers claimed the Shaymus Guinn Cup for the first time since 2017 and the four-goal win is the largest margin of victory over the Warhawks since 1983.
Junior Konrad Ziaja opened the scoring for the Pioneers in the 35th minute on a header following a corner kick from sophomore Ethan Dietrich. The goal was Ziaja's fifth of the season and third in the past two games.
UW-Platteville added another goal in the first half after a shot by junior Marcelo Garay was saved by the keeper but then ricocheted off a Warhawks defenseman and into the net.
In the second half, the Pioneers tacked on two more goals to increase the lead to four. Freshman Justin Williams tallied his fourth of the year in the 61st minute after dribbling up the field and blasting a shot to the lower right corner. Four minutes later, sophomore Ethan Dietrich gathered an errant pass and found the net for the third time on the year to cap the scoring.
The Pioneers dominated in the match in shots, outshooting the Warhawks 23-6 and 12-3 in shots on goal. Dietrich finished with a game-high 10 shots, including four on goal, while sophomore Sebastian Carranza added three shots.
Sophomore Seth Aiken made three saves to secure the shutout, his fifth of the season. He improved to 6-0-4 on the year.
The Shaymus Guinn Cup is named in honor of the son of Warhawk head coach and UW-Platteville men's soccer alum Tony Guinn, who passed away in 2012 at the age of 11 after a five-year battle with pediatric cancer and chemotherapy-induced A.L.L. leukemia.
The Shaymus Guinn Foundation benefits awareness for pediatric cancer and assists families coping with the disease. Visit the foundation's web page to learn more.
UW-Platteville heads on the road for the next two matches, starting with a 3 p.m. contest against Principia on Saturday afternoon.
*As with every UW-Platteville win this year, the Platteville A&W will be offering a $3 Pioneer burger the day after the win and the Platteville Taco John's will be offering 10 tacos for $10 the day after each Pioneer win.
