CHICAGO, Ill. – In the opening round of the NCAA DIII Tournament, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's soccer team fell to Willamette 3-1 at Stagg Field in Chicago, Ill.
The Pioneers defense held strong against the Willamette offense in the first half, holding the Bearcats scoreless on 12 shots. Freshman goalkeeper Seth Aiken stopped three shots for UW-Platteville, including a diving save on a shot that found a hole in the Pioneer back line. UW-Platteville totaled two shots in the opening half, with the best scoring chance coming on a shot by junior Jack Gentilli, but his attempt went just wide.
Sophomore Konrad Ziaja had a chance to score early in the second half, but his header off a free kick bounced off the left post before being cleared by Willamette. The Bearcats broke through in the 63rd minute after a cross into the box found the foot of Jett Starr who tucked a shot past Aiken. Willamette added goals in the 82nd minute and 88th minute to extend the lead to three. Freshman Ethan Dietrich got the Pioneers on the board just 30 seconds after the Bearcats goal, with senior Mitch Reid assisting.
The Pioneers finished with six shots compared to 20 total shots for Willamette. Aiken tallied four saves on six shots faced.
