DUBUQUE, Iowa – A second half goal propelled the University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's soccer team (7-2-1) to 1-0 win and its sixth straight victory on Tuesday night against the University of Dubuque (4-4-2).
The Pioneers had most of the scoring chances in the opening half, firing six shots compared to just one for the Vikings. Freshman Danny Gutzwiller narrowly missed a goal in the ninth minute as his shot bounced off the crossbar, while freshman Ethan Dietrich placed one on target in the 39th minute that was turned away by Dubuque keeper Matt Marchiori.
In the second half, sophomore Konrad Ziaja capitalized on a perfect free kick pass from junior Jack Gentilli to put the Pioneers ahead in the 61st minute. Ziaja's first goal of the season proved to be the game winner, as UW-Platteville held the Spartans scoreless the rest of the way. Gentilli's assist was his sixth on the year.
Dubuque tallied eight shots in the second half, but the Pioneers defense and freshman goalkeeper Seth Aiken maintained the one-goal advantage. It's the third consecutive shutout for UW-Platteville, including back-to-back 1-0 victories.
The game was even at nine in shots, while the Pioneers led 4-1 in shots on goal. Dietrich led the team with two shots as eight different players attempted at least one shot.
The Pioneers host Loras on Saturday, Oct. 1 for Alumni weekend. The game kicks off at 7 p.m. inside Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
