PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's soccer team fell 4-1 to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.
While there were opportunities, it was not meant to be for the Pioneers (12-4-2) as they outshot the Warhawks (14-5-1) 24-12 Wednesday night.
The teams remained deadlocked 0-0 after 44 minutes of play, but a final attack of the half by UW-Whitewater by Jalen Holley from Andres Villarreal gave the Warhawks an energizing boost going into the half, 1-0.
The Pioneers returned with a spark and scored less than two minutes into the second frame to tie the game 1-1- with a header by freshman Lucas Godon off a corner kick from junior Mitch Reid.
Unfortunately for UW-Platteville, the Warhawks mirrored the same play in the 63rd minute to take a 2-1 lead following a corner kick and subsequent goal. Less than a minute later, a fast-acting Warhawk crew doubled their lead with an unassisted goal by Devin Howard which ended a shuffle in the box.
The visitors finished off the night's scoring with one final goal following another corner kick to give UW-Whitewater a 4-1 lead with just less than 20 minutes remaining in the game.
The Pioneers tallied 12 shots in each half with 10 on goal for the night. The Warhawks also had an evenly divided game with six shots in each half for a total of eight on frame.
UW-Platteville held an 8-4 advantage over corner kicks while the Warhawks tallied 13 fouls to the Pioneers' six.
Freshman Chase Werner had four saves while Jake King registered nine.
The Shaymus Guinn Cup, which features a traveling trophy, is the annual match-up between the Pioneers and Warhawks. The game is named in memory of UW-Whitewater's head coach Tony Guinn's late son who passed away at the age of 11 following a five-year fight against E-Wing Sarcoma and chemo induced Type A.L.L. Leukemia. Guinn himself was a dual-sport UW-Platteville student-athlete during his undergrad.
The Pioneers will return to action this Sunday, Oct. 31 when they travel to Elmhurst College for a 12:30 p.m. start time.
