Pioneers fall to Warhawks in regular season finale
WHITEWATER, Wis. – The No. 18 University of Wisconsin-Platteville men’s soccer team fell 3-0 to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in Wednesday night’s classic rival match-up. The Warhawks victory clenched the Shaymus Guinn Cup trophy which will stay in Whitewater for the year until next year’s matchup.

WHITEWATER, Wis. – The No. 18 University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's soccer team fell 3-0 to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in Wednesday night's classic rival match-up. The Warhawks victory clenched the Shaymus Guinn Cup trophy which will stay in Whitewater for the year until next year's matchup.
The Pioneers were unable to comeback from the Warhawks' early lead in the 4th minute. Kyle Clancy's corner kick was headed in by Hozai Ceballos to put UW-Whitewater ahead 1-0.
In the second half, another Warhawk corner kick was headed in during the 57th minute to extend the lead to 2-0. The final score goal was earned in the 81st minute when Isaac Monson was assisted by Jack Wirth after a throw in.
Overall, the Pioneers were unable to find many scoring opportunities. UW-Whitewater held a 17-7 shots advantage with 12 on frame for the Warhawks and one for the Pioneers. UW-Platteville held the slight advantage on corner kicks with six to five.
The Pioneers conclude their regular season schedule 12-2-3 while UW-Whitewater improved to 13-5-1.
The UW-Platteville men's soccer team is not part of a conference and therefore cannot automatically qualify for the NCAA DIII Tournament. The Pioneers must wait to see if they can earn an at-large bid that is made by the NCAA committee which uses preset criteria to determine the remainder of the field once the 42 automatic qualifiers are set. The NCAA Tournament Selection Show is set for Monday, Nov. 5 at Noon CST.
