Men’s soccer defeats No. 5 Warhawks in overtime

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville men’s soccer team took down another nationally ranked opponent as they defeated the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks on Wednesday night, 2-1, in overtime at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. -- The University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's soccer team took down another nationally ranked opponent as they defeated the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks on Wednesday night, 3-2, in overtime at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium. 

The first goal of the game came at the 22:25 mark when Lucas Aplin put one in unassisted off a rebound. Within three minutes, the Warhawks evened the game up putting it in off their own rebounded shot. The teams entered the break tied at 1.

In the second half, the Pioneers came out strong with a goal from senior Jon Stopple, who logged his eighth goal of the season on a shot off a loose ball from 20 yards out to take the game to 2-1. At the 81:24 mark, the Warhawks responded and tied the game 2-2, forcing overtime play.

It was freshman Logan Rinderknecht who kicked in the winning goal from 15 yards out at about seven and a half minutes into overtime, from an Aplin assist. This would be his seventh goal of the season.

Senior goalkeeper Scott Sibik had five saves in the win, including a crucial one late in the second half of the game.

This game between the Pioneers and Warhawks was the third annual Shaymus Guinn Cup, held in honor of the Warhawks' head coach Tony Guinn's son, Shaymus, who passed away three years ago to pediatric cancer.

The Pioneers return to action for their last game of the regular season against Carroll University (Wis.) on Sunday, Nov. 1 for Senior Day at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium at 2 p.m.
