OSHKOSH, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's soccer team gave fifth-ranked UW-Oshkosh all they could handle, and with 32 seconds left in the second overtime, Titans' Tony Starnes scored the game-winning goal downing the Pioneers, 2-1, in the WIAC semifinal on Wednesday night.
"I'm very proud of these boys," said head coach Enzo Fuschino. "They played really well, created a number of chances to finish the game and put a team of this caliber with their back against the wall all night long."
UW-Platteville's Mbodje Sarr put the Pioneers up 1-0 in the 20th-minute and was assisted by senior Michael Prudisch. A yellow card by Pioneers' goalkeeper Ian Christensen gave the Titans a penalty kick, and Jan Nachtigall tied the game up on the penalty kick with 40 seconds left in the first half.
The Titans had their opportunities in the second half, out shooting the Pioneers 6-2. But the Pioneers dominated the first over time, out shooting UWO 6-2, but couldn't find the golden goal. With 32 seconds left, Starnes scored the game winner off a 30-yard pass from Karl Bock.
The Pioneers end the 2013 season with a 7-9-3 record and say farewell to four seniors, who were major contributors to last year's run to the NCAA Regional Semifinals.
"I would like to give a special thanks to the seniors for four special years," said Fuschino. " But we have a number of very good young players who will lead us in the very near future."
