Heller Scores Game-Winning Goal in 1-0 Win Over Dubuque
Senior Anthony Heller (pictured from earlier this season) has had a knack for being around the soccer ball throughout his career at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
The anchor of a stingy defense turned into an offensive threat on Monday night when he crept into the pitch on the offensive side for his fourth shot of the season against Dubuque. His presence proved to be the difference in the game as he recorded his third goal of the season and his second game-winning effort in a 1-0 victory over the visiting Spartans at Pioneer Stadium.
Heller headed in a cross from Richard Rowell in the 32nd minute to extend the UW-Platteville winning streak to three games. It also is the second-straight win by the Pioneers over a regionally-ranked team as Dubuque entered the game No. 10 in the latest regional rankings. The win puts the Pioneers over the .500 mark for the first time since Sept. 18 and at 8-7-1 overall.
The Pioneers (8-7-1) held a decisive 9 to 5 advantage in corner kicks and an 11-7 margin in shots. With the aggressive onslaught by UW-Platteville, the visitors were kept off the scoreboard on the strength of Jared Kuehl, who made four saves for his fourth shutout of the season.
Dubuque (7-5-1) had three shots in the first 23 minutes that were saved by Kuehl and five corner kicks in the second half to create opportunities. Sam McKee and Nick McDonald each had two shots in the loss for the Spartans.
UW-Platteville will put its three-game winning streak on the line, next, when they host UW-Oshkosh on Sunday, Oct. 16 on Senior Day at Pioneer Stadium. On Saturday, the Pioneers knocked off the Titans in Oshkosh, 1-0.
