Pioneers roll to season-opening win

New inside players Chas Cross and Joe Allen combined for 34 points, helping UW-Platteville to an 83-62 victory over Wisconsin Lutheran Monday in the 2010-11 season opener.

Cross, a 6-9 freshman from Winnebago, Ill., tied senior point guard Nick Allen with a team-high 18 points by making 7-10 from the field. Joe Allen, a 6-6 senior and former UW-Milwaukee player, came off the bench to score 16 and grabbed a game-best seven boards in just 14 minutes.

Nick Allen also made 7-10 from the field for his 18 points. Junior guard Brett Stangel, in his first career start, scored 11 points, while senior forward Eric Wall had eight points and five rebounds. Sophomore forward Rob Stallion (two points, two assists) joined Nick Allen, Stangel, Cross and Wall in the starting five for Coach Jeff Gard's club.

The Pioneers led 42-28 at the half, then used a 19-9 run to start the second half and go ahead by 24. The Warriors never came closer than 17 the rest of the way and trailed by at least 20 for the final 6:45.

Forward Alex Merbach led Wisconsin Lutheran with 11 points.

The Pioneers make their home debut this weekend in the Gabe Miller Tip-Off Classic. Wash U. faces UW-Eau Claire Friday at 5 p.m. with the Pioneers to follow at 7 p.m. against 4-1 Clarke. On Saturday, the WIAC schools flip opponents, with Eau Claire meeting Clarke at 5 p.m. and the Pioneers tangling with Wash U. at 7 p.m.
