UW-Platteville used a stifling defense to beat 20th-ranked Wash U. 64-49 Saturday to win the Gabe Miller Tip-Off Classic on Bo Ryan Court.

By clogging the lane and aggressively contesting outside shots, the Pioneers held Wash U. to 34.6 percent from the field.

The Pioneers overcame their own slow offensive start to close the first half with a 14-2 run for a 31-22 lead.

The Bears closed within 35-29 in the second half, but Matt Weik scored in the paint and Nick Allen followed with a three-pointer for an 11-point margin. Two Eric Wall free throws made the score 50-40 with 8:21 remaining, and Coach Jeff Gard's club held a double-digit advantage the rest of the way.

Nick Allen scored a game-high 18 points, while Brett Stangel had 13 and Wall 10 for the 3-0 Pioneers. Alex Toth led the 2-1 Bears with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Alan Aboona had 11 points for Wash U., coming off a 24-3 season.

Nick Allen earned tournament MVP honors, and was joined on the all-tournament squad by Wall, Toth, UW-Eau Claire's Amadou Fofana and Clarke's Chad Boston. UW-Eau Claire beat Clarke 84-63 in Saturday's first game.
