OT buzzer-beater stings Pioneers

UW-Platteville were dropped by overtime buzzer beater in its first conference game to UW-Superior 80-79 Saturday afternoon on Bo Ryan Court.

The Pioneers only lead in the first-half 4-2 while the Yellowjackets largest lead was 11 and took a 37-32 lead into halftime. The UW-Platteville's Nick Allen made a lay-up with 43 seconds left in the game to cut UW-Superior to one. Rob Stallion then made one-of-two at the free throw line to tie the game 70-70 with 6.2 seconds left. Yellowajackets' Dustin Ritchie turned the ball over with 1.8 seconds. Pioneers' Eric Gerber missed a contested game winning three-point as regulation time ended.

In overtime the Pionners took a 79-78 lead by two Nick Allen free throws with four seconds left. UW-Superior's Jake Smith knocked down a 17-foot buzzer-beater to give the Yellowjackets their first conference win.

The Pioneers (4-3), had three players score over 18 points. Nick Allen scored a career-high 20 points, while Joe Allen contributed 19 points and 10 rebounds. Gerber also add a career-high 18 points with 11 of them coming from the free throw line.

UW-Superior (5-2), was led by Smith's 29 points and 11 rebounds, while Dan Culy recorded 15 points and Greg Roeder with 13 points.

The Pioneers travel to UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday Dec. 8 and to UW-La Crosse on Dec. 11. Also The Men's Basketball Boosters are planning to take a bus to the game at LaCrosse on Dec 11, 2010.  The cost is $20.00 and it includes your ticket to the game.  The bus would depart at 11am to allow time for lunch (not included).  UW-Platteville return home on Dec. 14 against Cornell.
