Eagles pull away from Pioneers

UW-La Crosse pulled away from visiting UW-Platteville during the final seven minutes and posted an 82-73 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory Saturday in Mitchell Hall.

The Pioneers were within 59-57 before the Eagles rolled off six straight points. Tony Mane made two baskets, and Corey Degner scored on a layup for an eight-point UW-L bulge. The Pioneers could no closer than seven over the final six minutes.

Joe Allen poured in a game-high 21 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Pioneers (4-5, 0-3 WIAC), while both Nick Allen and Chas Cross scored 14. Eric Wall, the conference's second-leading rebounding at 8.4 per game, had 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Mane, the WIAC's top scorer, had 20 points, making 9-19 from the field. Luke Tweed hit 6-7 from the field and scored 14, and both Al Chery and Joran Rumple finished with 11. The Eagles,who led 40-36 at the half, shot 53.4 percent for the game, including 62 percent in the second half. La Crosse improved to 5-6, 2-2.

The Pioneers play their final game before final exams on Tuesday at 7 p.m.against Cornell (Iowa) on Bo Ryan Court.
