Posted January 20, 2010

Sixth-ranked UW-Whitewater beat UW-Platteville 73-63 in front of 1,618 Orange Night-charged fans on Bo Ryan Court Wednesday night, spoiling a night that featured the Pioneers in orange home jerseys and UWP Coach Jeff Gard in a similar-colored suit coat.

Dustin Mitchell scored 29 points, making 12-16 from the field, and grabbed nine rebounds for the Warhawks, who improved to 15-2 overall and 7-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. D.J. Dantzler added 14 points and Dupree Fletcher 10 off the bench.

Curt Hanson and Mike Shaw led the Pioneers with 18 and 17 points, respectively. Nick Allen added 11 points for UWP, who fell to 10-7, 4-4.

The Warhawks scored the last six points and the first hoop of the second half, breaking a 29-29 tie. Dantzler had a jump shot at 14:18 and two free throws a minute later, making the score 47-35. Allen's jumper cut the lead to 49-44, but UWW answered with a 6-1 spurt. Nolan Free's offensive tip-in and subsequent foul shot put the Warhawks up 56-45, and the Pioneers came no closer than nine the rest of the way.
