Pioneers fall vs. Yellowjackets

UW-Superior pulled away from UW-Platteville to beat the visiting Pioneers 78-65 Saturday in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game.

Both teams are now 4-5 in WIAC. The Pioneers fell to 10-8 overall, and the Yellowjackets, who outscored UWP 31-18 down the stretch, improved to 10-7.

The Pioneers, who trailed 32-28 at the half, took their first lead at 43-42 on an Eric Wall layup with 14:25 to play. Coach Jeff Gard's club had three different three-point leads, the last being at 47-44.

UWS's Marcus Helland tied the contest at 47-47 on a three-point basket with 11:34 left, and Dan Culy's layin at 9:48 gave the Yellowjackets the lead for good at 49-47. Another Culy jumper gave UWS a 63-54 lead with 4:28 to play, and after a Shane Kieler layup, Helland drilled another three for the first double-digit lead at 66-56.

Curt Hanson led the Pioneers with 19 points, while Wall had 18 points and a career-best 13 rebounds. Mike Shaw added 11.

Jake Smith led a balanced Yellowjacket attack with 19 points, while Helland had 18, Dwight Hill 17, and Culy 15.

The Pioneers are back in action Saturday in a home doubleheader with the women's team against UW-La Crosse on Alumni Day. The women's alumni game is at 10 a.m., and the men's at 11 a.m. The UWP women face the Eagles at 3 p.m. with the men to follow.
