Pioneers open WIAC play with win

Posted December 5, 2009

Curt Hanson scored a career-high 29 points, and both Eric Wall and Mike Shaw grabbed career-best 12 rebounds, leading UW-Platteville to a 75-63 win over UW-Superior Saturday on Bo Ryan Court.

The Pioneers won their fourth straight game, improving to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Yellowjackets fell to 3-2, 1-1.

"It's definitely big," Hanson said about the win. "This conference is so strong, and you want to get every one that you can get."

Hanson scored 19 of his 29 in the second half, helping the Pioneers erase a 34-28 deficit. He topped his previous best of 27 against UW-Whitewater in the 2007 WIAC playoffs.

"I was just feeling it, and my teammates set me up a lot of times," the senior guard said. "They got me the ball in the right places and just kept finding me. I had no idea (about the career high). I just wanted to get the win."

The Pioneers earned the win by using a late 17-4 run, breaking open a 55-54 game. Hanson began the run with two free throws and a three-point basket. A short time later, Shaw and Nick Allen hit back-to-back three-point field goals, making the score 70-58.

Wall added 18 points, and Shaw scored 14. Both playeers eclipsed their previous highs of nine rebounds. Allen scored 8 points and had 5 assists.

Superior's Dwight Hill scored 23 points, including 13 in the first half. Jake Smith added 18 points and 8 rebounds, and Ben Aalfs totaled 14 points, 9 rebounds.
