Pioneers face Blue Devils

UW-Stout held off visiting UW-Platteville 87-81 Saturday in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game in Menomonie.

The Blue Devils overcame an early 10-0 Pioneer lead to take a 32-31 halftime lead. They led by as many as 15 in the second half, then held off all Pioneer rallies.

UW-Platteville trailed 71-59, then scored six straight to come within six at 71-65. UWP was within six the next three possessions as well, only to see the Blue Devils answer with baskets. A Curt Hanson layin brought the Pioneers within 78-73 with 1:23 left, but Erik Olson answered with two free throws. Shane Kieler scored an old-fashioned three-point play, bringing UWP within 82-76, but Jerrod Buchholtz answered with two free throws. A Mitch Tordoff three-point shot narrowed the gap to 84-79, but Buchholtz made one of two free throws. Kieler scored two free shots with four ticks left, making the score 85-81, before Buchholtz wrapped up the game with two more free throws.

UW-Platteville fell to 9-5 overall and 3-2 in the WIAC, while the Blue Devils improved to 7-7, 2-4 with their second straight win.

Five players scored in double figures for Coach Jeff Gard's club. Nick Allen led UWP with 16 points, while Hanson had 15, Kieler 14, Mike Shaw 13, and Eric Wall 12.

Eric Hostetter led Stout with 29 points, and Jerrel Enerson-Matthews scored 21, and Buchholtz 14.

The Pioneers play at UW-Stevens Point, ranked second nationally by D3hoops.com, Wednesday at 7 p.m.
