Defense keys 67-47 win

Posted December 10, 2009

Curt Hanson scored 23 points, Mike Shaw added 17, and UW-Platteville held D.J. Marsh, the WIAC's leading scorer to eight points, in a 67-47 victory over UW-Oshkosh Thursday night on Bo Ryan Court.

The Pioneers scored the final six points of the first half for a 30-24 lead and opened the second with a 7-2 run for a 37-26 advantage. The Titans never came closer than nine the rest of the night.

Hanson made 6-9 from the field, and all 10 of his free throw attempts for 23 pioints, while Shaw connected on 6-10 shots, including 4-7 three-point baskets. Shane Kieler added 11 points, and Eric Wall had 10 for the Pioneers, who improved to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the WIAC.

Greg Schrimpf led the Titans (4-4, 1-1) with 12 points. Marsh, who came into the game averaging 25.1 ppg, made 2-12 from the field.

"That was really a great effort defensively," said the Pioneers' Nick Allen, who started on Marsh, "not just holding their best scorer under 10. Under 50 is usually our goal in a game. I think we played good team defense, help defense. I think that was the key. We hit shots when we needed to."

The Pioneers made 52.5 percent from the field, compared to 32.1 percent for the Titans. UWP is now just one of two unbeaten teams in conference play, joining UW-Whitewater.

"We always talk about protecting the home floor," Allen said. "That's very important. Obviously getting off to a good start in the WIAC is important as well. It's such a competitive conference. You have to start out on a high note."
