Posted December 29, 2009

Thousand-point scorers Curt Hanson and Mike Shaw led UW-Platteville to an 84-76 overtime victory over Lewis and Clark Tuesday in the Grand Canyon Classic in Phoenix, Ariz.

Hanson scored 25 points, making all 10 free throw attempts, and Shaw scored 20, including 10 in the overtime session, leading the Pioneers. Hanson moved to 17th on the Pioneer all-time scoring list with 1,207 points, and Shaw became the 32nd player in Pioneer history to break the 1,000-point barrier.

The 8-3 Pioneers rallied from a 45-37 halftime deficit, taking a 60-53 lead. Lewis and Clark, however, tied the game at 70 on P.J. Taylor's inside move with 49 seconds remaining to force the extra session.

Shaw began the overtime with a three-point basket and UWP never trailed again in the battle of Pioneers. Taylor scored in the lane, but Shaw answered with a layup and, after a Lewis and Clark free throw, nailed another three. Lewis and Clark cut the deficit to 78-76 on a James Hollins basket and free throw, but Hanson made four free throws and Shaw two to hold off the Portland school.

Eric Wall added a double-double for Platteville with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while freshman Rob Stallion added a career-high 12 points.

Josh Kollasch scored 17, and Kelly Edwards 16 for Lewis and Clark, who fell to 1-6 with its third overtime loss of the season.

UWP faces Westminster (Utah), the 12th-ranked team in NAIA, Wednesday night.
