Blugolds overcome Pioneers

February 6, 2010

UW-Eau Claire overcame a hot UW-Platteville first half, beating the visiting Pioneers 79-70 Saturday and creating a three-way tie for fourth place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The Pioneers, who began the day alone in third place, raced out to a 42-36 halftime lead by making 64.3 percent of their shots. The Blugolds, however, scored the first six points of the second half and took the lead for good at the 14:39 mark.

UWEC, which shot 66.7 percent in the second half, got a 29-point, 10-rebound performance from Geoff Probst, who scored his 1,000th career point. Josh Prince and Amadou Fofana each added 16 points.

Curt Hanson, who became the eighth player in Pioneer history to surpass 1,400 career points, led UWP with 21 points, while Nick Allen scored 13, Shane Kieler had 12, and Eric Wall and Mike Shaw 10 apiece. Both Allen and Wall grabbed eight rebounds, and Hanson had five assists.

The Pioneers and Blugolds are both 13-8 overall and 6-6 in the WIAC, tied with UW-Superior for fourth. The top four teams in the league play host to WIAC post-season tournament games, with the top two teams earning byes in the six-team tourney.

Coach Jeff Gard's team plays its final road game Wednesday at UW-Whitewater, then closes with home games against UW-Stout, UW-Stevens Point, and UW-River Falls.
