Carthage hands UWP first loss


Carthage College rode hot shooting to hand UW-Platteville its first loss, 78-65 Saturday night in Kenosha.

The Red Men shot 67 percent from the field, making 28 of 42. They were 25 of 30 on shots inside the three-point arc.

Carthage made 10 of its first 13 shots, going up 28-19. The Pioneers, behind strong play by Eric Wall, cut the deficit to 38-35 at the half.

Wall had already set his career high in the first 20 minutes, scoring 17 points of his 23 points.

UWP came out and scored the first seven points on the second half, taking a 42-38 lead. The Red Men ran off the next 12 straight points, going back ahead 50-42 and forcing UWP into a catch-up mode the rest of the game.

Steve Djurickovic made 7-9 from the field and 9-10 from the line for 24 points, while Max Carey scored 16, and Pierce Tyler made all five shots from the field for 14 points for Carthage (2-1).

Wall was nearly perfect from the line, hitting 9-10 in his 23-point effort. Curt Hanson finished with 17 points, shooting 6-6 from the line. As a team, the Pioneers 17-20 at the free throw line.

The 2-1 Pioneers make their Bo Ryan Court debut Tuesday, playing host to Anderson (Ind.) at 7 p.m.
