Posted November 17, 2009

When it came time for the shootout, UW-Platteville's Mike Shaw had the most in his arsenal.

Shaw tied a Pioneer record with 7 three-point baskets--all in the first half--and scored a game-high 24 points in UWP's 86-79 victory over Aurora in the Carthage Classic Friday in Kenosha.

Shaw's final three-pointer came with four seconds left in the first half, giving the Pioneers a 46-43 in a wild period in which the two teams combined for 16 three-point baskets. The Pioneers scored 14 straight points, turning a 25-15 deficit into a 29-25 lead.

The Spartans led 70-67 in the second half, but Eric Wall made a layup, Nick Allen 1-2 free throws, and Wall scored inside again to give UWP the lead for good at 72-70. Curt Hanson made four throws in the final 16 seconds to secure the victory for the Pioneers, who made 20-25 from the line.

For the second straight game, five Pioneers scored in double figures. Hanson, limited to 21 minutes because of foul trouble, had 17 points, while Wall scored 16, Shane Kieler 15, and Allen 12. Shaw added seven rebounds and six assists to his point totals.

Dusty Magee had 16 points and Anthony Boykins 10 for the Spartans, who also put five people in double figures.

The 2-0 Pioneers play Carthage at 7 p.m. Saturday. Aurora faces UW-Whitewater in the 5 p.m. game.
