#5 UWW beats #4 UWP

February 11, 2009

Fifth-ranked UW-Whitewater outscored fourth-ranked UW-Platteville 16-6 down the stretch to beat the visiting Pioneers 75-62 in front of 1,926 fans in Kachel Gym Wednesday.

The Pioneers trailed just 59-56 after Curt Hanson's two free throws with 2:59 remaining, but Miles McKay's three-point basket 13 seconds later ignited a 7-0 Warhawk run. McKay and Dustin Mitchell each added two free throws, making the score 66-56. Hanson, who finished with 24 points, made a three-point basket, drawing UWP within seven, but Mitchell's dunk with 1:28 left all but sealed the win. The Warhawks hit seven of 10 free throws in the final 1:27 to account for the final score.

Both teams are now 19-3 overall and tied for second at 11-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. They trail UW-Stevens Point by two games in the league race, but both have one more game with the Pointers, starting with the Warhawks Saturday.

Hanson's 24 led all scorers, while Charlie Lohoff added 14 points, and Mike Shaw scored 10. Jeff Skemp was held to seven points, only the second time he has been under double figures this season.

McKay topped the Warhawks with 19 points, while Kori Vernon scored 18, Mitchell 17 and Matt Goodwin 13.

The game, which the Pioneers led 32-31 at the half, featured nine ties and 13 lead changes.

The Pioneers close their regular season home schedule Saturday, facing UW-Superior at 1 p.m. Prior to the game, UWP will salute the senior quartet of Bo Richter, Kyle Tetschlag, Skemp and Lohoff, who have played in 398 games with 247 starts and scored nearly 3,000 points.
