Lohoff, Pioneers top Falcons

Charlie Lohoff scored 24 points, including a key insurance basket with 42 seconds remaining, to lead undefeated and third-ranked UW-Platteville to a 69-62 victory at UW-River Falls Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers improved to 9-0 overall, matching their best start since 1999-2000, and 3-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for the first time in nine seasons. The Falcons suffered their first WIAC setback, falling to 5-4, 2-1.

The Falcons led 31-28 at the half, then scored the first seven of the second half for a 10-point lead. The Pioneers battled back quickly, tying the score at 40-40. The game was tied three more times before the Pioneers took the lead for good at 58-56 on two Nick Allen free throws with 4:34 remaining.

With UWP ahead 63-60, Mike Shaw made two free throws for a 65-60 lead. The Falcons' Steve Farmer scored inside with 1:04 to play, but Lohoff answered with a basket 22 seconds later for a 67-62 advantage. Curt Hanson nailed down the win with a pair of free throws with 13 seconds remaining.

Lohoff made eight of 11 shots, including 4-7 three-point attempts, and all four free throws. Jeff Skemp added 15 points and nine rebounds, while Hanson added 11 points and nine rebounds. The Pioneers were held under 51 percent shooting for the first time all year, making 43.6 from the field. Coach Paul Combs' club compensated by making 88.9 percent from the line (16-18).

Jontae Koenhaew scored 18 points, and Wade Geurin 11 for the Falcons, who made 53 percent from the field.

The Pioneers will take the week off of competition for finals, then play host to the University of DUbuque squad Saturday at 1 p.m. The Spartans are off to a 6-2 start on the season.
