Pioneers top UWO, set up showdown

UW-Platteville used a 19-5 run to close the first half with a 17-point lead, and the fourth-ranked Pioneers went on to beat UW-Oshkosh 81-59 Wednesday on Bo Ryan Court.

The Pioneers held a 21-18 advantage when they went on the run over the last 7:09 of the half. Curt Hanson began the streak with a three-point basket, and Charlie Lohoff ended it with a drive down the lane with two seconds left. The Pioneers shot 70 percent in the first half for the 40-23 lead.

The Titans never came closer than 13 in the second half and trailed by 20 or more over the final 11:16.

Jeff Skemp scored 24 points, making 6-10 from the field and 12-16 from the line. He also grabbed eight rebounds and dished out four assists. Mike Shaw added 19 points, while Hanson recorded 14.

D.J. Marsh led the Titans (7-7, 1-4 in the WIAC) with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Matt Miller and Corty Wittwer each scored 12. Dane Seckar-Anderson, who came into the game averaging 16.6, scored six points as he battled foul trouble trying to guard Skemp. The Pioneers shot 34 free throws (making 28) to the Titans' 14 of 17.

Both teams protected the ball well, combining for 13 total turnovers.

The Pioneers improved to 13-1 overall and 5-0 in the WIAC, setting up a huge game Saturday with sixth-ranked UW-Stevens Point. The Pointers beat UW-River Falls 95-87 in overtime, improving to 10-2 and 4-0. Tip-off on Bo Ryan Court is 3 p.m. Saturday.
