Pioneers beat UW-La Crosse

Fourth-ranked UW-Platteville jumped out to a quick 10-point lead and beat UW-La Crosse 77-63 Wednesday on Bo Ryan Court.

After the Eagles' Andrew Hass scored the first points of the game, the Pioneers scored the next 12 and never trailed again. They led 41-20 at the half and by as many as 29 at 69-40. The final margin was as close the Eagles came since the score was 30-16.

Long-range shooters Mike Shaw and Curt Hanson each scored 19 points for the Pioneers, who improved to 19-2 overall and 11-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. hanson was 5-7 from behind the three-poitn line, while Shaw was 4-7. Center Jeff Skemp scored 17 points, despite sitting the final 15 minutes in the lopsided affair. Charlie Lohoff dealt out four assists and made five steals to go along with his seven points.

The Pioneers made their first 15 free throws and were 24-29 from the line overall.

Paul Combs won his 99th game as the Pioneer coach. In his sixth season at UWP, Combs has a 99-52 record.

Tony Mane came off the bench to lead the Eagles (9-12, 3-9) with 20 points with 14 in the second half. Trevor Stratton, who had 35 points against UW-Superior Saturday, scored 10 points.

UW-Platteville, which was ranked third in the first NCAA III West Region poll Wednesday, has its bye weekend Saturday then plays at fifth-ranked UW-Whitewater Wednesday at 7 p.m.
