UWP 'D' keys win at Stout

Jeff Skemp made the go-ahead free throw, and UW-Platteville forced two UW-Stout turnovers in the final minute, lifting the visiting Pioneers to a 55-51 victory Saturday.

Skemp was fouled on an offensive rebound, and made one of two free throws with 1:01 left for a 52-51 lead. Charlie Lohoff then forced a loose ball, and Mike Shaw dove to tip the ball to Curt Hanson, who went in for a layup with 38.8 seconds remaining. The Pioneers then denied the Blue Devils a three-point attempt, and Nick Allen forced a turnover in the right corner. Lohoff was fouled with 5.6 seconds to play. He made the first of two free shots, clinching the 55-51 win.

The fith-ranked Pioneers improved to 16-2 overall and 8-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Blue Devils slipped to 6-11, 1-8.

Skemp and Hanson led the Pioneers with 15 points apiece, with Skemp making 9-11 from the line. The Pioneers, coming off Wednesday's emotional 86-78 win over seventh-ranked UW-Whitewater, survived a season-low 35.6 percent shooting day, including 5-22 on three-point attempts. UWP made 18-24 from the line, compared to 9-10 for Stout.

Jerrod Buchholtz had 19 points, including 12 in the first half, to lead the Blue Devils, while Jerrell Matthews-Enerson added 16.

The Pioneers took their first lead at 16-14 on Hanson's jump shot and extended it as much as 25-18. Hanson's three-pointer with one second remaining gave UWP a 34-30 halftime advantage.

Buchholtz tied the score at 47 with a three-point shot with 7:34 to play. Lohoff's deep shot from the left corner gave the Pioneers a 49-47 lead, and Shaw's fadeaway jumper gave the Pioneers a 51-49 advantage. Buchholtz made two free throws with 1:22 remaining, tying the score at 51. On the Pioneers' next possession, Allen was fouled on a drive to the basket. He missed his free throws, but Skemp was fouled on the rebound, and his first shot gave the Pioneers the lead for good.

UWP plays at UW-Oshkosh Wednesday at 7 p.m., then faces UW-River Falls Saturday at 1 p.m. for the annual Alumni Day. The Pioneer women alumni play at 9:30 a.m., followed by the UWP men alumni at 10:30 a.m. The current Pioneers the face the Falcons in a doubleheader, the the men's game first at 1 p.m. One ticket is good for the whole day.
