Allen lifts Pioneers past Anderson

While senior Jeff Skemp surpassed 1,000 career points Tuesday, it was sophomore Nick Allen whose points most likely will be remembered. Allen buried a jump shot with seven seconds remaining to lift seventh-ranked UW-Platteville to a thrilling 66-64 victory at Anderson (Ind.)

Skemp, who scored a game-high 29 points, tied the score with a dunk with 48 seconds remaining. After the Ravens missed a shot, Allen grabbed the defensive rebound with 14 seconds left. After a timeout, the Pioneers tried working the ball into their all-American center, but Charlie Lohoff found Allen underneath for the open shot and the game-winner. Anderson's Rod Holliday missed a three-pointer at the buzzer.

The Pioneers improved to 4-0 on the year while handing Anderson (1-1) its first loss.

The Ravens were picked to finish second in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, while the Pioneers were picked likewise in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Anderson led by as many as 15 in the first half at 37-22 before setting for a 37-27 halftime lead.

UWP tied the game at 40-40, and the second period featured seven ties and five lead changes.

Skemp made 12-15 from the field and 5-5 from the line for his 29 points. He became the 30th player in Pioneer history to surpass 1,000 career points, as he now has 1,006. Curt Hanson added 13 points, while Allen had eight, and Mike Shaw and Lohoff had seven each. Lohoff dished out a team-high six assists.

Ryan Fultz and Ty Riddle scored 16 apiece for the Ravens, with Riddle drilling five three-pointers. Anderson held the Pioneers to just 3-17 from beyond the arc, although the visitors connected on 24-35 (68.6 percent) of their two-point tries.

UW-Platteville plays at the John R. Collier Tournament this weekend in Hanover, Ind., facing 21st-ranked Wooster (Ohio) at 6 p.m. EST. Hanover plays Indiana University-Southeast in the other game, with the consolation and championship contests set for Sunday.
