Pioneers pass UWRF road test

UW-Platteville led from start to finish to earn an important road victory, 71-60 over UW-River Falls Saturday.

Jeff Skemp recorded his 10th career double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Curt Hanson had 16 points and Charlie Lohoff 14.

The 22nd-ranked Pioneers remained in first place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 15-4 overall mark and 9-2 league record.

Skemp had 10 of his points in the first period, helping the Pioneers to a 31-22 advantage. With the Falcons trying to defend the 6-10 center in the second half, Hanson went to work, collecting 14 of his 16 points after intermission.

Mike Shaw, who had seven points and four assists, gave the Pioneers their largest lead at 54-35 with two free throws at 12:11. Hanson's three-point basket made the count 66-48 with 7:34 to play, the last field goal the Pioneers would make. Shaw (2-2), Lohoff (2-2) and Langenfeld (1-2) all made free throws in the final 1:24 to seal the game.

Deone Compton scored 11 and Courtney Davis 10 for the Falcons (7-12, 1-9).

The Pioneers face another road test Wednesday, playing UW-La Crosse at 7 p.m. A fan bus is going to the contest, and $20 covers the cost of both the bus and the game ticket. Call the UWP Athletic Office at 608.342.1567 for more information.

UW-Platteville returns to Bo Ryan Court Saturday at 1 p.m. vs. Robert Morris-Springfield (please note time). The Pioneers will also collect donations during the game for the "Shoot A Three for Bri" campaign in honor of women's player Brianna Klaas, who is battling cancer.
