Skemp, Lohoff pace victory

January 16, 2008

Jeff Skemp matched his career high and Charlie Lohoff made several key plays down the stretch, leading UW-Platteville to a 74-65 victory over UW-La Crosse Wednesday on Bo Ryan Court.

Skemp had 23 points and Lohoff 17, helping the Pioneers improve to 11-4 overall and 5-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Eagles fell to 7-8, 2-4.

The Pioneers led 33-23 at the half and led by as many as 13 in the second period, but the Eagles cut the lead to four points on three occasions.

With the Pioneers up 53-49, Lohoff made the defensive play of the game. He blocked Tony Mane's three-point attempt at the top of the key and raced down for a layup. After an Eagle miss, Lohoff scored on another fast-break. During a timeout, La Crosse coach Ken Koelbl was whistled for a technical after protesting Lohoff's block on Mane. Curt Hanson then made both free throws for a 59-49 Pioneer advantage.

The Eagles crept back within 63-57 on Andrew Haass' layup with 2:32 remaining, but Lohoff buried a three-point shot 31 seconds later to make it a nine-point game.

UWP shot 57.5 percent from the field, the seventh time in the last eight games shooting better than 50 percent. The 6-10 Skemp made 9-13 from the floor and matched his high set against Wash U. in November. Lohoff added six rebounds and five assists to his 17 points and held Mane to four total points, 12.5 below his team-leading average.

Hanson added 14 points, while Mike Shaw made all three of his shots for had nine points.

Haass made 7-8 from the field and had 17 points, while Brown was 6-6 and finished with 16. Chris Fehrenbach added 13 points and Billy Kegler 12 for the Eagles, who made 59 percent in the second half and 53 percent overall.

The Pioneers are off until next Wednesday, when they travel to first-place UW-Whitewater. The Eagles play host to UW-Oshkosh Saturday.
