Pioneers nipped in overtime

UW-Eau Claire tipped visiting UW-Platteville 77-69 in overtime during a back-and-forth battle Wednesday in the Blugolds' Zorn Arena.

Ryan Shea had nine of his 19 points in overtime, as the hosts outscored the Pioneers 16-8. Two Shea free throws gave the Blugolds a 69-64 lead with 2:19 to play. After Josh Langenfeld made a layup for the Pioneers, Rashaan Goodwin made one of two free throws and Shea made two more. UWP's Jeff Skemp scored a layup with 32 seconds remaining, slicing the lead to 72-68, but UWEC's Geoff Probst scored inside one second later and Shea's free throw with 23 second left sealed the game.

The Blugolds improved to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Pioneers fell to 4-2, 1-1.

Beyer led all scorers with 29 points, while Shea had 19, and Probst and Goodwin 12 apiece.

Langenfeld poured in a career-best 24 points, making 7-10 from the field and 8-10 from the line. Skemp recorded his sixth career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Charlie Lohoff added 11 points and seven rebounds.

The game was tied at 32-32 at the half following nine ties and 12 lead changes. The Pioneers threatened to blow the game open with an 15-3 run to start the second half. Langenfeld had a three-point basket, a jump shot and four free throws during the run.

The Blugolds whittled the lead down and re-gained the advantage at 58-57 with 3:41 remaining on Goodwin's three-point shot. Shea followed with his own three-pointer, giving the hosts a four-point lead with 2:48 left. Lohoff scored a layup with 1:23 left and Skemp followed with another exactly a minute later, tying the score at 61-61 and forcing the extra period.

UW-Platteville plays host to UW-River Falls Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Fox Sports Net Game of the Week.
