Hot Pioneers win WIAC opener

UW-Platteville missed just one shot in the final 10 minutes and beat visiting UW-Superior 89-78 Saturday in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener.

The Pioneers made nine of their last 10 shots while improving to 4-1 overall. For the game, UWP hit on 57 percent from the field, including 68 percent (15-22) in the second half.

Curt Hanson, who made 5-7 three-point shots, led the Pioneers with 23 points, while Mike Shaw had 15, and Josh Langenfeld and Jeff Skemp each scored 13. Skemp added eight rebounds, four blocks and three assists, and Charlie Lohoff had eight points and six assists.

Jake Smith led four Yellowjackets (1-3) in double figures with 20 points. Dan Cully added 19 points, draining five three-point shots, while Dwight Hill had 15 points and seven points, and Shane Manor scored 10.

UWS led by as many as four in the first half, with the latest being 24-20. The Pioneers scored eight straight, with Shaw's put-back basket giving the Pioneers a 25-24 lead. UWP led 37-31 at halftime and went up by 11 (52-41) six minutes into the second half. The Yellowjackets came within 64-57, but Skemp's dunk and two free throws by Hanson restored the 11-point bulge.

The Pioneers hit the road Wednesday for a WIAC game against UW-Eau Claire.
