Pioneers warm up for win

UW-Platteville heated up in the cold of UW-Superior, beating the Yellowjackets 72-58 Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers, coming off a 25-percent shooting game Wednesday at UW-La Crosse, rebounded nicely by hitting 47 percent of their shots while rolling to the win. UWP led 39-28 at the half and allowed the hosts to come no closer than five (50-45) in the second period.

UW-Platteville improved to 13-9 overall and remained in fourth place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with an 8-6 mark. UW-Superior fell to 6-17, 1-13.

Four Pioneers scored in double figures, led by Mark Gossens with 18. Charlie Lohoff added 16 points, while Kyle Tetschlag had a career-best 14, and Curt Hanson 13. All of Hanson's points came in the first half, as the freshman made 4-5 three-point attempts in the first 20 minutes.

Leonard Cobb led the Yellowjackets with 19 points, 17 coming in the second half, and nine rebounds.

The Pioneers forced 18 UWS turnovers, recording 10 steals. Tetschlag had four thefts to lead the defensive charge.

UWP plays at second-ranked UW-Stevens Point Wednesday at 7 p.m. then salutes seniors Mike Jamerson and Gossens before the final home game, Saturday vs. UW-Oshkosh at 5 p.m.
