Titans drop Pioneers in season finale

UW-Oshkosh, ranked fifth by D3hoops.com, beat UW-Platteville 67-51 in the regular-season finale Saturday night on the Pioneers' Bo Ryan Court.

The Titans jumped out to a 28-10 lead and went on to win their 20th game against five losses. They finished tied for second in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at 12-4. The Pioneers dropped to 13-11 overall and 8-8 in the WIAC.

The Pioneers finished fifth in the WIAC and will play at fourth-seeded UW-Whitewater Tuesday at 7 p.m. Third-seeded UW-Oshkosh will play host to UW-River Falls.

UWO led 36-20 at the half and extended the margin to as much as 24 (54-30) in the second half. Thanks to full-court pressure, the Pioneers climbed back late in the game, coming within 11 twice, the latest at 58-47. Kerry Gibson made 3-4 free throws, pushing the margin back to 14 at 61-47.

Gibson led the Titans with 18 points, 7 rebounds and 7 blocks, moving into fourth place all-time in NCAA III history with 345 blocks. Jim Capelle added 12 points.

Mark Gossens and Mike Jamerson were saluted before the game on senior night. Gossens had 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Mike Shawk added 11 points and Curt Hanson 10.

The Pioneers made two more field goals (21-19) than the Titans, but UWO hit 23-36 on the line, while UWP was 4-6.
