Pioneers fall to Titans

January 2, 2007

UW-Oshkosh's senior-laden team beat an injury-depleted UW-Platteville squad 79-58 Tuesday night at UWO's Kolf Sports Center.

With injured Pioneer players Mark Gossens (64 career starts), Jeff Skemp (59) and Josh Langenfeld (11) sitting on the bench in street clothes, the remaining Pioneers had a combined 59 starts among them. UW-Oshkosh had three four-year starters with at least 84 starts each in its lineup.

The game Pioneers led 20-16 halfway through the first period before the Titans' experience began paying off and they closed with a 21-2 run. UW-Oshkosh surged to a 37-22 halftime lead and never trailed again.

UWP fell to 7-4 overall and 2-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Titans improved to 10-2, 3-1 with their eighth straight win.

Freshmen Mike Shaw and Curt Hanson led the Pioneers with 14 and 11 points, respectively. The Titans made 60 percent from the field and had five players in double figures, with D.J. Marsh scoring 18, 7-1 center Kerry Gibson 12, Jordan Johnson and Jim Capelle 11 each and Jim Doeden 10.

The Pioneers play in Williams Fieldhouse for the first time in exactly a month as they face UW-Superior Saturday at 1 p.m.
