Eagles shut down #15 Pioneers

UW-La Crosse seniors Joe Werner and Chris Ask combined for 43 points in leading the Eagles past #15 UW-Platteville 69-56 Wednesday in Williams Fieldhouse.
The Eagles won their sixth straight game while improving to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Pioneers suffered their first loss, dropping to 5-1, 1-1.
Werner had 25 points and 10 rebounds for his 22nd career double-double, while Ask had 18 points, 8 rebounds and 6 steals.
Junior center Jeff Skemp led the Pioneers with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while freshman guard Curt Hanson added 14.
Skemp scored 8 of the game's first 9 points, giving UWP an early 8-1 lead. The Eagles battled back and took the lead for what turned out to be for good at 22-20 with 2:48 to play in the first half.
UW-L, who was just three spots out of the D3hoops.com top 25, extended a 28-20 halftime lead to as many as 17 points.
La Crosse led 58-41 with 3:15 remaining before the Pioneers staged a late rally. Hanson scored five points during the run and Skemp finished it with two free throws, slicing the deficit to 60-53 with 2:05 left.
Brandon Brown (3-4) and Werner (2-2) then made their free throws for a 65-53 advantage that put the game out of reach.
