Warhawks get hot, beat Pioneers

UW-Whitewater did not miss a shot from the floor for an eight-minute stretch as the Warhawks rallied to defeat UW-Platteville 72-61 Wednesday night in Williams Fieldhouse.

The Warhawks went from 8:43 to the final minute without a miss, hitting eight straight field goals to come from behind for their ninth straight win.

UWW, who trailed 37-25 at the half, took its first lead on Melvin Williams' layup and free throw at 3:36 to play for a 57-55 lead.

The Pioneers were within two at 61-59 on LeVon Crawford's layin, but Andy Freund hit a three-point shot with 1:51 to play and made a layup 11 seconds later for a 66-59 advantage. UWP could come no closer.

The league-leading Warhawks improved to 11-2 overall and 6-0 in the WIAC, while the Pioneers fell to 7-7, 2-4.

Crawford led all scorers with 24 points, while Jeff Skemp added 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Mark Gossens scored 10 for the Pioneers.

Jeremy Manchester topped the Warhawks with 21 points, while Freund had 13 and Giovanni Riley 10.

UW-Platteville blew out to the large halftime lead by hitting 55.6 percent from the field and limiting UWWW to 42. The Pioneers also owned the backboards in the first half with a 17-9 advantage, but ended with a 29-28 rebounding margin.

The Pioneers return to Williams Fieldhouse Saturday to face UW-Eau Claire in the second game of a doubleheader. The women's contest begins at 5 p.m. and the men will follow 30 minutes after the conclusion. One ticket is good for both games.
