Pioneers win 90-70 at UW-Whitewater

Dec. 7, 2004

UW-Platteville, led by a 10-0 scoring run by LeVon Crawford, used a big second half to beat UW-Whitewater 90-70 Tuesday night in the Warhawk's Kachel Gym.

After a sluggish first half the Pioneers out-scored the Warhawks 51-34 in the final 20 minutes while improving to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Warhawks fell to 4-3, 0-3.

"We just came out and relaxed and played Platteville basketball," Crawford said. "We came out and got the ball inside."

Crawford scored all 10 points early in the second-half run, pushing a 50-47 lead to 60-47. Four of his baskets came off layups and the other after an offensive rebound. After the Warhawks came within 62-52, Brad Reitzner and Brandon Temperly hit back-to-back three-point shots for a 68-52 advantage. The Warhawks never came closer than 11 the rest of the way.

Temperly led all scorers with 22 points, while Crawford had 19 points and 10 rebounds. Both Reitzner and Sean Krause scored 17 points, with Krause adding seven assists and five steals.

The Pioneers led 39-36 after a first half in which the teams were whistled for 27 fouls, including technicals on both benches, and a combined 33 free throws. Krause hit a three-point basket and made a steal and layup on the next possession in the final minute to give the Pioneers momentum and the halftime advantage.

In the second half, UWP connected on 17 of 26 second-half shots for 65 percent. Temperly made 3-4 from both the field and the line in the final half.

"The perimeter people did a good job passing the ball, and the post players did a good job of moving inside," Crawford said. "It was a real team effort."

The UWP defense held the conference's top-shooting team to 36.5 percent from the field. Mike Toellner and Angelo Griffin each scored 13 for UWW, who finished the game without head coach Pat Miller after his second technical foul.

"It's always tough playing Whitewater because of the rivalry," Crawford said. "It's important because it's a road win, and we have a lot of road games to go."

The Pioneers hit the road to Indiana for a loaded tournament Friday and Saturday. The Pioneers face host Wabash at 7 p.m. central time. Undefeated Wheaton (Ill.) and NAIA nationally ranked Marian (Ind.) play in the first game.
