Pioneers' defense sparkles vs. UW-Eau Claire

UW-Platteville turned in the second-best defensive effort for one half in school history while beating UW-Eau Claire 59-42 Saturday night in Eau Claire's Zorn Arena.

At the half, the Pioneers led 28-11, the lowest point total for an opponent in the opening period since Coe was held to 10 in November, 1997.

The Pioneers improved to 8-5 overall and 3-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. UWP concluded its six-game road trip that began Dec. 7 with a 4-2 record. The Blugolds fell to 9-5, 3-3.

Brandon Temperly scored 12 of his team-high 18 points in the first half. LeVon Crawford added 10 points, while Sean Krause had nine. Mark Gossens chipped in with seven points and eight rebounds, second to Temperly's nine boards.

The Blugolds, who made just four field goals in the opening half, were led by Casey Drake's 18.

The Pioneers are now home for five straight games, beginning Wednesday vs. UW-La Crosse. The women face the Eagles at 5:45 p.m., followed by the men's game at 8 p.m.
