posted 3/27/02

UW-Platteville junior forward Tyler Selk earned all-NCAA Division III West Region second team honors by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and Pontiac.

UW-Platteville's Tyler Selk earned his second consecutive all-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first team men's basketball honor.

The junior forward from Randolph was highly ranked in almost every WIAC statistical category. He was second in rebounding (7.8 per game), fifth in assists (3.65), sixth in both scoring (17.5) and shooting (53.5 percent) and 15th in free-throw percentage (76.1 percent).

Pioneers Fall to Pointers

By Paul Erickson, UWP Sports Information Director

Stevens Point, Wis. -- Some of the oldest basketball cliches are "the ball didn't bounce our way," "we couldn't over the hump" and "we just couldn't get a break."

Tuesday night at Quandt Fieldhouse, those old cliches showed why they have stood the test of time.

For much of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference quarterfinal contest, UW-Platteville would battle within five to six points of second-seeded UW-Stevens Point and threaten to overtake the home team, only to see the Pointers push the lead back to 10.

Finally, after the last good opportunity slipped away for UWP, the Pointers pulled out a 72-57 victory.

UW-Stevens Point improved to 21-5 and will meet UW-Whitewater Thursday. The Pioneers ended their season at 14-12.

The Pointers put the Pioneers into an early 24-8 hole by hitting 10 of their first 14 shots, including four three-pointers. UWP fought its way back, eventually coming within 32-28 on Bryan Stangel's three-point shot at the 4:47 mark of the first half. That started the back-and-forth game over the next 16 minutes that saw the Pioneers come tantalizing close, yet never able to take the lead.

A perfect example of the night came with UW-Stevens Point holding a 52-47 lead with 8:46 remaining. Stangel's three-point shot went halfway through the net but popped back out, robbing the Pioneers a chance to make it a two-point lead. Instead, the Pointers quickly scored the next five points for that 10-point cushion again, and UWP was never able to come closer than seven the rest of the night. The hosts made their last 14 free throws to ensure the win.

Senior center Ben Shambow, in what turned out to be his last collegiate game, led the Pioneers' offensive charge with 16 points, while junior forward Tyler Selk added 15 and junior forward Stangel scored 10. Junior point guard Will Carter dished out a game-high six assists. Selk concludes the year with 1,168 career points, ranking him 16th on the Pioneer charts.

Neal Krajnik led the Pointers with 21 points, while Josh Iserloth scored 15, Jason Kalsow 12 and Kalonji Kadima 11.

Schambow and reserve forward Mike Burkholder are the only players who will graduate off Coach Todd Landrum's club.

Pioneers Draw Pointers Following Loss

posted 2/16/02

It's deja vu for the UW-Platteville and UW-Stevens Point men's basketball teams, who will meet again in the first round of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoffs for the second straight year.

Last year, the Pioneers stunned the Pointers 57-56 on Bryan Stangel's three-point bomb at the buzzer. The Pioneers again come in as the number seven seed, while the Pointers are seeded second.

UW-Platteville fell to seventh after losing 78-67 to visiting UW-River Falls Saturday. The Pioneers are 14-11 overall and 7-9 in the WIAC. UW-Stevens Point knocked off UW-Superior 83-56 to finish as a tri-champion with UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater. The Pointers are 20-5 overall and 11-5 in the WIAC.

Other first-round matchups find #8 UW-Superior (11-14, 3-13) at #1 UW-Oshkosh (19-5, 11-5) and #5 UW-River Falls (16-8, 9-7) at #4 UW-La Crosse (17-8, 10-6) in one bracket. The Pioneers-Pointers' winner gets either #6 UW-Stout (12-12, 7-9) or #3 UW-Whitewater (19-6, 11-5).

UW-River Falls claimed the fifth spot with the 78-67 victory in Williams Fieldhouse Saturday. The Falcons shot 60 percent from the field and received 33 points from Rich Melzer and 15 points and 10 rebounds from Edmund Johnson.

The Pioneers were led by Tyler Selk's 24 points and 10 rebounds. Stangel chipped in 12 points, and Ben Schambow added 10. Before the contest, Schambow and Mike Burkholder were honored on Senior Night.

The Falcons jumped out to a 40-30 halftime lead, thanks to making 18 of 29 shots (62.1 percent). Selk led the Pioneers' early-second half rally with a pair of three-point shots and a swift shuffle pass to Schambow, who scored and was fouled. The Pioneers finally tied the score at 50 on Stangel's three-point shot, but Melzer responded with eight points during a 13-3 Falcon run. UWP never got closer than three points the rest of the night.

UW-Platteville earned a convincing 80-67 men's basketball win at UW-Eau Claire Wednesday.

The Pioneers stretched an early four-point advantage to 31-19 late in the first half, and the Blugolds never came closer than eight points the rest of the night. Twice, the Pioneers' lead reached 17 points.

Bryan Stangel scored a career-high 28 points, making 11-15 from the field, including 2-3 three-point shots. He also knocked down 4-5 from the line, helping the Pioneers to an 18-21 night from the line.

Tyler Selk added 14 points and 7 rebounds, while Mario Boyd and Ben Schambow scored 10 apiece. The Pioneers connected on 63 percent from the field, compared to just 40 percent for the Blugolds. UWEC's Jason Larson led all scorers with 30 points.

The Pioneers improved to 14-10 overall and 7-8 in the wacky WIAC, which features four teams atop the standings with one game to play. La Crosse, Oshkosh, Stevens Point and Whitewater are all 10-5, and the Pioneers will open the WIAC playoffs Tuesday at one of their gyms. The Blugolds fell to 11-13, 3-12.

UWP closes its home season Saturday vs. UW-River Falls. Before the game, the Pioneers will salute seniors Schambow and Mike Bukholder, and the annual Senior Poster will be given to the first 250 fans.
