PLATTEVILLE, WIS. - The UW-Platteville Pioneers men's basketball team defeated the UW-River Falls Falcons 74-64 on Wednesday in Williams Fieldhouse.
The Pioneers won their first WIAC conference game ending their two-game skid. The Pioneers used stingy defense in the post and on the perimeter to hold the Falcons to 35.5% shooting from the field and a minuscule 29.2% from three.
Clay Gerds, 6 points 8 rebounds, and Kyle Tuma held their own in the post holding the Falcons big men to a combined 6-22 shooting. Quentin Shields who did not shoot it well controlled the pace for the Pioneers and went a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line. Shields finished with 17 points. Carter Voelker had his first double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Robert Duax chipped in with another 17 points and 7 rebounds.
For the game the Pioneers out rebounded the Falcons 40 to 33 while grabbing 11 offensive rebounds that led to 12 second chance points.
The Pioneers return to WIAC action Saturday Jan. 12 at UW-Stout with a 3 p.m. start time.
