Pioneers conclude perfect trip with 16-2 win

UW-Platteville finished a 5-0 trip to Fayetteville, N.C. by beating Lasell 16-2 Friday behind another record performance.

Coach Eric Frese's team tied a school record with 23 hits, making the third straight game at least one mark was tied or set. Aaron Hopson tied records with six hits and three doubles in a 16-15 win over Utica Wednesday, and Joe Nartowicz set a new standard with 8 RBIs in a 21-2 win over Lasell Thursday.

The Pioneers began Friday's contest with six runs in the top of the first and rolled to the win. Twelve players had at least one hit, led by Jason Jacobson with four, Brett Benesch and Hopson with three apiece, and Alex Siehoff, Derrick Rice, Wade Axelson, and Steve Bomkamp with two each.

Trevor Kattre crashed his first Platteville home run, a two-run shot in the sixth.

Pioneer pitchers struck out 15 batters Friday, including 10 by starter Brandon Byrne during his five-inning stint.

UWP, now 5-1 overall, outscored its opponents 81-31 during the trip and hit .436 as a team.
