Pioneers pound Warriors

April 8, 2009

UW-Platteville took out its frustrations from its UW-Stout trip by pounding Wisconsin Lutheran 24-1 and 18-0 Wednesday in Milwaukee.

The Pioneers, who had dropped three of four at Stout, evened its record at 9-9. The Warriors fell to 3-18.

The 24 runs in the first game were one shy of the school record, set earlier this season at Maryville (Mo.) The Pioneers had 15 hits and took advantage of eight Warrior errors. Both Brett Benesh and Jason Jacobson tied the Pioneer record with five runs apiece. Eight players brought home at least two runs, with Matt Paulus recording four RBIS.

Kyle Kubatzke earned the pitching run with four innings of one-run ball, and Sam Hershberger threw the final three frames of one-hit relief.

Four pitchers combined on a two-hitter in the nightcap, with Corey Connolly (three innings), Brent Cashore (one), Nick Budden (two) and Grant Oldenburg (one) combining on the first shutout of the season.

James Gallagher and Paulus each had three hits apiece in the 16-hit attack. Gallagher had a triple in game two after doubling in the first contest. Paulus finished the afternoon with seven RBIs, as eight players again knocked in multiple runs in the nightcap.

The Pioneers saw their batting average jump 13 points, from .297 to .310, with the big-hitting afternoon.

Coach Eric Frese's club plays host to UW-Superior Thursday at 1 p.m. and Friday at noon.
