Pioneers fall 6-4

Posted March 17, 2009

The weather was almost the same in Platteville as it was in Montgomery, Ala. Tuesday, and so were the respective city's baseball teams. Huntingdon College rallied for a 6-4 decision over UW-Platteville Tuesday in a well-pitched, well-played game.

The Hawks struck for three runs in the first inning against Wil Osmanski before the junior stymied the home team's offense.

Cole Payne hit a two-run home run in the Pioneer second, and Brenden Watson's solo home run gave the Pioneers a 4-3 lead in the third. UWP held the advantage until the Hawks scored two in the sixth and one in the eighth.

The Pioneers loaded the bases in the ninth, but Derrick Rice's line drive to left was caught by Huntingdon, ending the game.

UWP fell to 4-3 with the loss, while the Hawks improved to 11-7.

Lee Hawkins had three hits for the Pioneers, including an RBI double in the third to score Steve Bomkamp. Osmanski scattered eight hits over 6 and one-third innings.

The same teams meet again Wednesday night.
