PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team split Wednesday's games at the Studer's Blue Wahoo Challenge in Pensacola. The Pioneers defeated Carroll University (4-6) 9-2 in the first game and came out on the short end of a 10-9 extra inning game against Rhodes College (9-8).
Jake Wegner appeared in only game two for the Pioneers (2-2), but went 3-4 and tallied two runs batted and two runs. Ross Krist also added two RBI and pair of runs while going 3-11 on the day.
On the mound in game one, Sam Hernandez struck out two, walked one and allowed three hits in four innings before Brady Hoppert relived Hernandez and recorded his first career win having pitched two innings. Nate Jennings tallied his first save of the season and finished the last three frames offering no hits. In game two, four pioneers slit pitching duty with Jennings suffering the loss with the walk off final hit in the 10thinning.
In game one, UW-Platteville was first on the board with a RBI double through the right side in the 2nd inning by Dillon Sunnquist. The lead exploded to 7-0 after the 4th frame. A throwing error to score two runs started the scoring brigade and was followed by a SAC fly, ground out RBI and single to center field by Krist. Garrett Gillund's single to center field scored the final run of the inning. Hunter Hopkins drilled one down the left field line to score two runs in the top of the next frame. The "other" Pioneers were able to score one run in the bottom of the fifth and another in the sixth, but the pitching staffs kept bats quiet allowing one hit in the final four innings.
In game two, the Pioneers were once again first on the board and put up five hits in the top of the 1st with two runs scoring on a throwing error by Rhodes' center fielder. Grant Mullins added SAC fly at the next at bat and extended UW-Platteville's lead to 3-0. Rhodes trimmed the Pioneers' lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the inning. UW-Platteville added two more in the third frame with Jake Wegner and Krist each tallying a hit and RBI. The Pioneers' lead jumped to 7-1 after 6.5 innings, but the Lynx put up five runs in the bottom of the sixth and another in the seventh for the comeback of the day. The pair of 7's held through nine innings leading to free baseball. Wegner and Mitchell McLaughlin had a pair of back-to-back RBI singles to give the Pioneers a 2-run advantage, but that would not be enough as Rhodes battled back as they had all day and clinched the win with three runs the next half inning.
UW-Platteville will return to action and seek to sweep Carroll University in Florida with a single game scheduled for Thursday, March 17 at 4:30 p.m. in Pensacola.
