PLATTEVILLE, Wis.--The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team concluded its 2017 season with a resounding 3-0 victory over UW-La Crosse in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday at Kendall Murray Field.
Lucas Keller turned in a standout starting pitching performance, throwing 7.1 innings of shutout ball and limiting the Eagles to five hits. Scott Gordon tossed the final 1.2 innings, giving up one hit and ending the game--and season--by inducing a ground ball double play.
Coach Eric Frese's club scored all three runs in the seventh. Jonny Frese broke open the scoreless game with a double to right center, scoring Josh Moses. Kyle Reinhart singled down the left-field line to score Frese, and Mitch Marty went down the right-field line with a single, bringing home Reinhart.
Frese, Reinhart and Collin Mormann all had two hits for the Pioneers, who ended the year 19-21 overall and 4-16 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
The Eagles won the opener 6-4 behind home runs by Sam Prissel and Alex Brown. Brown's HR was a three-run blast in the fourth inning. They will take a 25-15 overall record into the WIAC playoffs, where their 11-9 league record earned them the second seed. UW-L will open with #3 UW-Stevens Point, and #4 UW Oshkosh will face host and top-seed UW-Whitewater Friday.
