MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville baseball team's two-game winning streak was snapped by Cornell College, 9-3, at Ash Park in Mount Vernon, Iowa on Saturday.
The Rams didn't waste any time to get on the board, as they scored a run in the top of the first.
Senior Ryan Duva tied the game up in the top of fifth inning, with a one-out RBI single, and then gave the Pioneers a 2-1 lead when he scored on a wild pitch a batter later.
Cornell answered with two runs of its own in the bottom half of the fifth, and used three hits to score two more runs in the sixth, making it a 5-2 game.
The Pioneers managed to take one back in the eighth, but the Rams took full advantage of three free bases in the bottom half of the frame, scoring four runs, 9-3.
Sophomore Scott Drake suffered the loss and gave up three runs on four hits in 4.2 innings.
Duva, sophomores George Jester III and Todd Wienkes each tallied two hits.
The Pioneers begin conference play on Tuesday when they host 14th-ranked UW-Whitewater for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
